How the chicken
got her wings
Long ago, Chicken didn’t have wings. She

before winter, she saw that all the animals had to look
for food – except Swallow.
“Hey, Swallow!” Chicken called. “Why aren’t you
looking for food? Winter is coming!”
Swallow laughed. “See these?” she said, flapping her
wings. “In winter, I fly South. There’s lots of food there.”

I want to fly South, too, thought Chicken. So she

wished for a pair of wings.
Her wish came true but, when the swallows flew away,
Chicken didn’t go with them. She
tried and tried, but she didn’t get
far because she didn’t know how
