The Myth of
Baba Marta
In Bulgarian folklore, the months were people.
March was Baba Marta, an old lady who lived
in the mountains. When she was happy, the
sun shone brightly, but when she got angry, the
weather was freezing cold.
One day, at the beginning of March, a young
girl took some sheep up the mountain. Her
father warned her that Marta would be angry.
The girl didn’t listen and Marta sent a blizzard.
3 a martenitsa Everything froze and the girl never returned.
So every 1st March everyone exchanges
martenitsi to keep Marta happy. They wear
them all month as a bracelet or a brooch.
Traditionally, someone can only take their
martenitsi off when they see a stork and then
they hang them on a blossoming tree.
